Summer/Autumn 2001

CÔR EIFIONYDD succeeds again!

The choir was successful again this year in the Cardigan Festival. The competition for mixed voice choirs attracted seven choirs from different parts of the United Kingdom and Ireland. However the pinnacle of the choir's year is always the National Eisteddfod.  Côr Eifionydd also won at this year's Eisteddfod in Denbigh against a selection of eight choirs of a high standard.  The repetoire for both competitions included pieces by John Rutter and the Welsh composer Brian Hughes.  In preparation for the competitions Brian Hughes conducted one of the choir's rehearsals which the choir a deeper insight to his music.

Later on in August the choir received an invitation to sing in a reception in Castell Deudraeth to celebrate it's opening.  However as many of the choir, including Pat and Ann were on holiday, only a small party from the choir was able to attend. But the choir were well received, and the world's most famous voice - Bryn Terfel, joined the choir to sing one song and a night to remember was had by all!

As the sailing competition “One Ton Cup” was held locally in Pwllheli in September, the choir were asked to sing in a reception to officially welcome the competition to Pen Llyn.

The choir held a grand concert in the Cricieth Memorial Hall in September, where we performed parts of Handel's Messiah with the North Wales Chamber Orchestra.  The soloists were Sian Eirian (soprano), Helen Medi (alto), Ian Rees (tenor) and Aled Edwards (bass).  This was the concert that was originally scheduled for March this year to launch the new CD, but because of the Foot and Mouth outbreak had to be postponed. The concert was recorded by Radio Cymru to be broadcast around Christmas time.  The audience were overjoyed with the choir, orchestra and especially the soloists! Being involved in a concert of this standard was an unique experience for the choir.
