Gwynedd Young Musician of the Year 2004

Background

The name of Côr Eifionydd is familiar locally and nationally. The choir has developed a reputation as a high quality ensemble that promotes choral music along with the Welsh language and culture. The choir is indebted to the local community for their support over the years and also to the young people of the area for their willingness to join the choir.

The Competition

Côr Eifionydd intends to support and promote young, local, individuals who wish to develop their musical skills. This will be done by arranging a competition that:

  • offers the opportunity to young people to perform on stage
  • offers advice and guidance
  • offers financial support towards the cost of lessons and/or copies and other resources etc.

Côr Eifionydd have committed to support and to arrange the competition for three years (2004, 2005 and 2006).

Some details

The choir will:

  • Invite young people who are in full time education in a secondary school in Gwynedd, in Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor or in Coleg Menai (Bangor site) to compete in a competition to be the “Gwynedd Young Musician of the Year”.
  • The performances may be vocal or instrumental
  • The competitors should be of a standard comparable to Grade 4 (Associated Board)
  • Competitors will be required to present a programme of no more that 10 minutes, and all vocal performances should through the medium of Welsh
  • Preliminary rounds will be arranged as necessary (during the weeks prior to the final round)
  • Those selected to compete in the final round will be invited to participate in a Masterclass with experienced tutors approximately a week before the final round. Tickets for the Masterclass may be sold to the public.
  • The final round will be held in a hall in Eifionydd during July 2004. Tickets for the evening will be on sale to the public. Côr Eifionydd will also perform during the evening.
  • The choir will arrange a panel of judges and an accompanist (as required)

The Main Competition (Final Round) – to be held at Neuadd Goffa, Cricieth

Prizes

Competitors reaching the final round will receive a Masterclass with experienced tutors.
The winner will receive:

  • A financial prize (£500)
  • An invitation to perform with Côr Eifionydd during the following year.

Sponsors

The Choir will be sponsoring the competition financially. The Choir is also indebted to Pianos Cymru (in association with Kawai Pianos) for sponsoring the competition.
