Summer 2000

Here is a summary of the choirs events during the summer.

Cricieth Festival (June)

For those of you who did not see one of the three performances of the light opera Culhwch ac Olwen, which was especially commisioned for the Cricieth Festival, you missed a treat! Yes, you missed the Choir singing the work of one of Wales' most renowned composers, Geraint Lewis, but more importantly you missed a dramatic and professional  performance by one of the choir members - Treflyn Jones. He had the part of  Cilydd, son of Cilyddon Wledig as well as the part of the Twrch Trwyth (alternately, not together!) and we will never forget his performance as the Twrch Trwyth - well done Treflyn!  We hope that Treflyn will not be giving up his singing to concentrate on his acting career.

Everyone who was associated with the show should be congratulated!

Aberteifi Festival (july)

It was a very successful festival for the choir, as we won every competition possible!! - the competition for a 'countryside' choir, and the mixed choir competition, before  going on to compete in and win the major competition of the festival - Choir of Choirs.  The choir won a substancial financial reward, and Pat will have to buy a new cupboard to display the Western Mail Challenge Cup, Coedllwyd Challenge Cup, Llanfyrnach Challenge Cup and the award presented to her personally as the conductor of the 'Choir of Choirs'!  This is the second time that the choir has won the 'Choir of Choirs', the first time was back in 1992 when the competition started.

The National Eisteddfod  (August)

The choir performed in a performance of the newly commisioned Groesffordd by Pwyll ap Sion and Iwan Llwyd in the pavilion of the National Eisteddfod in Llanelli on the first Sunday evening of the Eisteddfod with Bryn Terfel, BBC Orchestra, Côr Rhuthun, Cantorion y Rhyd, Cantorion Sirenian, Cantorion Teifi, and Côr Caerdydd. It was an exciting experience to be part of a choir that filled the whole stage at the Eisteddfodd, and of course singing alongside Bryn Terfel and the BBC Orchestra.

Porthmadog Concert

The choir performed in the Ganolfan, Porthmadog on Saturday, 9th of September with the tenor Rhys Meirion, the soprano Siân Eirian and the Cybi Quartet in an evening organised for the benefit of Ysgol y Gorlan, Tremadog. It was nice to see the Ganolfan full, with the audience obviously enjoying the musical feast.

North Wales Music Festival, St Asaph

The choir sang in a Noson Lawen during the festival this year with Caryl Parry Jones, Sian James and Trelawnyd Male Voice Choir.  The evening was recorded by HTV and was later broadcasted.

Cerdd Dant Festival, Bangor

The choir were yet again succesful at this festival!  We won the first prize in the Folk Choir competition in a very tough competition extremely late at night!

Many other events are planned for the new year and the choir will also be preparing to record the new CD of parts of the Messiah to be released at Easter.
